Snow White’s Failure: Time for Originality
March 28, 2025 | by Success Regime

- Hollywood is known for being glamorous and exciting, but lately, it seems like they’re running out of fresh ideas. They keep making new versions of old, popular movies because people remember them fondly and they think these familiar stories are a safe way to make money. This leads to lots of remakes, reboots (starting the story over), and different versions of movies we already love. Sometimes, these new versions turn out surprisingly well, like the Jumanji movie that came out in 2017. But most of the time, these remakes don’t work out so great. People who loved the original movies are disappointed, and the movie companies end up losing money.
- The recent live-action Snow White movie from Disney is a perfect example of this. It was a big flop and cost Disney a lot of money. It really shows that some classic stories are better off left as they were.
- The first Jumanji film was released in 1995 and had the great actor Robin Williams. It was an enjoyable blend of thrilling adventure, humorous scenes, and a romantic family tale. Then in 2017, they produced another Jumanji film entitled Welcome to the Jungle. It featured new actors and a new, contemporary storyline with a twist involving a video game. Yet it was somehow like the first film in certain aspects and also new and engaging. It wasn’t merely a remake of the original film. Rather, it was an intelligent means of extending the tale, and fans of the initial film as well as new, younger audiences loved it.
- Due to the fact that this new Jumanji was so successful, it would appear that Hollywood believed they could remake any older, popular film and create a hit new edition for contemporary viewers, regardless of how they managed to do so.
- Next, in 2016, they produced a new Ghostbusters movie with female stars. The first Ghostbusters were released in 1984 and were a totally popular film. The original Ghostbusters was an extremely humorous and influential film with actors that all people remember and a plot that was extremely fresh. The film released in 2016 did not have horrible actresses, but it just lacked something. The plot was the same, but the production of it and the tone of the movie just were not correct. So, movie reviewers did not like it very much, and few people went to see it in theaters. This should have shown Hollywood that just taking a popular old story and putting different actors in it doesn’t mean it will be a hit.
- But perhaps the best example of Hollywood going wrong with remakes is the new live-action Snow White film by Disney. The original Snow White cartoon was released in 1937 and was a genuinely great movie. This new film cost Disney a tremendous amount of money – half a billion dollars! But nearly everyone has hated it. It received an extremely poor rating of just 1.5 out of 10 on IMDb, and just 42% of users approved of it on Rotten Tomatoes. There are numerous reasons why this film flopped, and it is an example of how dangerous it is to tamper with a classic too much
- The main problem with this remake seems to be that it changed the original story way too much. The lovely story of a princess running away from an evil queen, finding a home with seven cute dwarfs, and finally being saved by a prince has been changed a lot. In this new movie, it looks like there’s no prince, and the movie is trying to be about “women being strong” in a way that’s not very clear. It’s okay to want to update old stories, but taking away the most important parts that people loved about the original is a big risk.
- Also, they decided to computerize the well-known seven dwarfs. They claimed that it was to be more inclusive, but many people weren’t happy with this. The dwarfs were an extremely significant part of the first film. They were amusing and also made the tale seem warm-hearted and friendly. Eliminating them and having only plain-appearing computer characters seems like they attempted to repair something that wasn’t broken. It lessened the charm of the movie and was not as emotionally impactful.
- The strong negative reaction to this new Snow White movie really shows that people love these old movies for particular reasons. They like the stories, the characters, and the way the movies felt that made them so popular. Changing these important things too much can make the audience that Hollywood wants to watch the movie not like it. So, Disney’s try to make this old fairy tale feel more modern went very wrong. They lost a lot of money, and it might have even hurt the reputation of the original Snow White.
- The failure of this Snow White remake should be a huge lesson to Hollywood. It clearly shows that people are fed up with remakes that aren’t great, don’t have the same feel as the original films, or even alter the stories we adore in ways that feel alien and unnecessary. Attempting to make quick cash by merely remaking existing films is not only demonstrating a lack of fresh ideas, but it’s beginning to cost them money.
- Instead of always looking at old movies for ideas, Hollywood needs to find its way to create new stories with new and interesting ways of looking at things. The success of movies like Everything Everywhere All at Once, Parasite, and even the first Jumanji shows that people really want to see new and exciting stories. Giving money and support to talented writers, directors, and actors who have new ideas is a much better way for Hollywood to be successful in the long run than just making new versions of old hits.
- Having people feel good about the past is a great means of attracting people to a film, but you must be careful and have respect for the original film. When remakes deviate so much from what made the original movie good, they may cause the people who enjoyed the original film not to like the new film. It’s difficult to modernize an ancient film for modern audiences without totally altering what it was all about. The recent Snow White disaster shows exactly what happens when they go too far
Conclusion
It’s time for Hollywood to learn from the mistakes they’ve made with recent remakes. The huge amount of money Disney lost on Snow White should be a warning. People don’t just want to see movies they already know; they want good stories, interesting characters, and new ideas. There aren’t an endless number of great old movies that Hollywood can keep making new versions of.
Hollywood’s future is not about repeating the same old movies again and again. It’s about being innovative and coming up with new stuff. It’s time for them to experiment, give a chance to new actors and writers, and show us stories we’ve never heard before. That’s the only way Hollywood can become the great place for movies again that everyone adored. Hollywood, just leave the great old movies alone. Folks have spoken loud and clear: we want new stories, not the same old ones repeated
